Howard Paul Lloyd, age 85, passed away on Saturday Dec. 5, 2020 at his home after a seven-month battle with skin cancer.
Paul was born March 18, 1935 in Thurman, Ohio to the late Howard and Maridoris (Williams) Lloyd. Paul graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1953. He received his BS in Math and physics from Rio Grande College in 1957, and his Master’s Degree from Marshall University in 1964. He began his teaching career at Circleville High School in 1957, then after being drafted and serving three years in the U.S. Army, he continued his teaching career at Jackson Middle School. In 1967, he began his career at Rio Grande as a Geometry professor. He retired as the Dean of Professional Studies and Head of Teacher Education in 2002.
Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mamie Clark Lloyd, on Dec. 22, 2019.
He is survived by his son, Kevin (Suzi) Lloyd; daughters, Karen (Greg) Spees and Alicia Kamer; grandchildren, Matt (Sarah) Lloyd, Kendra (Ben) Allen, Kaitlyn (Joe) Frame, Seth (Morgan) Lloyd, Jenna Spees, and Adam Kamer; as well as great-granddaughters, Addison and Austyn Lloyd, Quinn and Cora Allen, and Stevie Frame. Paul is also survived by bonus daughter, Angela Jewell; his faithful companion, Snowball and many nieces, nephews, and many friends.
In addition to his wife and parents, Paul was preceded in death by siblings, Bill (Opal) Lloyd, John (Ruth) Lloyd, Jean (Bill) Cooper, and Janet Lloyd.
Paul was a longtime member of the Oak Hill Presbyterian Church. He was a founding member of the Madison-Jefferson Fire Department, was an original member of the McDonald’s Coffee Club and belonged to numerous other civic and educational groups. Paul enjoyed farming, gardening, traveling, and being with his family. He will be greatly missed, but the legacy of his family and influence on educators in southeastern Ohio and beyond will live on.
Public graveside services will be held Friday, Dec. 11, 2020 at 11 a.m. at C.M. Cemetery in Oak Hill with military graveside honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Oak Hill Elementary Shoe Fund, c/o Oak Hill Schools 205 Western Ave Oak Hill, OH 45656. Paul grew up of humble means and understood the importance of a new pair of shoes in a child’s life.
