Grace Emily (Lambert) Compston

Grace Emily (Lambert) Compston, 84, of Belmont, Ohio, passed away Friday, June 10, 2016.

Grace was born Sept. 8, 1931, the daughter of Chauncey Isaac Lambert and Nancy Jane (Staten) Lambert in Jackson, Ohio. She married her late husband, James Lantz Compston Jr. of Wellston, on her 19th birthday, Sept. 8, 1950.

In addition to her parents and her husband of nearly 60 years, Grace was preceded in death by brothers, John “Vernie” Wyvernne Lambert (Orpha Mae), Claude Leroy Lambert and Sanford “Si” Harold Lambert (Betty).

She is survived by two sons, Steven Lantz Compston and Larry Curtis Compston (Marie); a daughter, Jennifer Letitia Compston-Strough (Michael); two grandsons, James Lewis Compston (Jordan) and Zachary Allen Compston (Amy); two step-grandsons, Craig Blevins (Jayna) and Brett Blevins (Amy); two great-granddaughters, Zadie Jane Compston and Olivia Blevins; a brother, David “Johnny” James Lambert (Judy); several brothers- and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Grace was a graduate of Jackson High School, Ohio University and the University of Dayton with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. She worked as a remedial reading teacher for many years before serving as principal of Belmont and Bethesda elementary schools. She retired as principal of Union Local Elementary School after overseeing the opening of that building.

Grace was an accomplished singer who instilled a love of music in all of her children. She enjoyed politics and poetry, as well as scrap booking and other creative pursuits. She was a lifelong Democrat and an advocate of equal rights for all.

Visitation and a memorial service were to be held Monday, June 13, at Kelly Kemp Braido Patron Funeral Home, 322 N. Main St., Bethesda. Visitation was set for 3-5 p.m. with the service at 5 p.m. The family invited all who knew Grace to join them for a meal immediately after the service at The Vestry, 211 Church St., Morristown.
