George Mapes

George W. Mapes II, age 66, of Wellston, passed away Monday, May 31 at his home. He was born April 12,1955 in Gallipolis, Ohio, son of the late George W. Mapes and Betty Ruth French Mapes. George was a 1973 graduate of Wellston High School. He was a certified electrician, a hard worker all his life, and was employed at McNally Pittsburg Manufacturing for 15 years, Sands Hill Coal Company for 32 years, and Jackson County EMS and SEOEMS for 25 years. George loved riding his Gold Wing and Harley motorcycles all over North America. If there was an issue with a motorcycle, George could fix it. He was definitely a jack of all trades. George was a member of the Elk Lodge #466 in Jackson, a lifetime member of both the American Motorcycle Association and the National Rifle Association, and was a former member of the Apple City Motorcycle Club and the Gold Wing Association.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Vickie Edwards Mapes; children, G.W. Mapes, David Mapes and Jennifer Mapes Spradlin; grandchildren, Lukas, Noah, Jalyn, Logan, Carson, Grace, Emma and Bella; sister and brother-in-law, Christina and Randy Sheidler; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Cathy Channel, Brenda and Mike Ousley, Pam and Chuck Moore, Barbara and Ike Dickerson, and Bub Edwards.

Besides his parents, George was preceded in death by infant brother Chuck Mapes; sister, Donna Mapes; and mother-in-law, Barb Ruckel.

Calling hours will be Thursday, June 3, from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral services will be Friday, June 4 at 11 a.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home with Pastor Roger Cartwright officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairmount Cemetery in Jackson.
