George Alfred Newkirk

George Alfred Newkirk, age 83, passed away early Thursday, Jan. 7, 2021.  He was born March 26, 1937 to the late Orville and Anna (Wright) Newkirk of Greenfield.  He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Sylvia Janet Newkirk.

He leaves behind five children, George Newkirk Jr. (Connie), of Indiana, Harold Newkirk (Alice) of Jackson, Allen Matthew Newkirk (Lorinda) of Florida, Leona Newkirk (Melvin) of Jackson, and Sherry Carriveau (David) of Jackson; grandchildren, Jeremy Newkirk (Alicia), Clint Newkirk (Jessica), Seth Newkirk, Sarah Lawhorn (Cody), Lora Boggs (Chris), Tyler Newkirk (Keri), Michael Newkirk (Shylah), Amanda Louderback (Michael), Brittany Glassburn, Molly Pierce (Steven), Cassie Essman, Dominique Carriveau, Carson Carriveau, Gina Roa (Juan), Damon Stapleton, Jasmine Wilson and Jarret Wilson and 20 great-grandchildren, along with many precious nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by three brothers, John Newkirk (Kathy), Wayne Newkirk (Barb), and Bob Newkirk (Brenda) and two sisters, Joan Brownlee and Ruth Funderburk.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two granddaughters, Millie Pierce and Brea Carriveau; brother and sister-in-law, Wilbur and Martha Newkirk; brother, Orville Newkirk; sisters, Hazel Newkirk, Shirley Newkirk, Patricia Jett, Gladys Staten, Dorothy Newkirk and Gemimia Harris; mother-in-law, Olive Brown; father-in-law, Jack Brown and close friend, Zane Brown.   

After school George worked for DT&I Railroad in his younger days.  He then worked various construction jobs in Columbus and then back home in Jackson.  He enjoyed coon hunting, farming, and woodworking.  He attended Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Jackson.  He will be sadly missed by all. 

Private funeral services will be performed by the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery in Wellston, Ohio.  Online condolences may be sent to www.lewisgillum.com.
