By | February 18, 2020

Gene Bishop, 71, of Wellston, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on May 12, 1948, son of the late Glenn and Amelia (Clay) Bishop. Gene proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a lifetime member of the Wellston V.F.W. Post #9092, and a past member of the American Legion. A maintenance man and electrician by trade, Gene was a “workaholic” who was sure to provide for his family. He enjoyed camping and fishing, building things, and taking trips to the casino. Most of all, however, Gene loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his loving family: wife, Janis (Smart) whom he married on July 11, 1980; sons, David (Nicole) Smart, Dustin (Hilda) Bishop, and Ronnie (Holly) Smart; daughters, Brenda (Richard) Smith, Tara Lear, and Tiffany (Jeff) Harvey; numerous grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as two brothers, Glenn Jr. (Margaret), and Sam (Rosemary); three sisters, Dolores, Joy, and Faye; and his dog, Jersey.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by one brother, Doug, and two sisters, Doris and Mary.

The family will receive friends at R.M. Williams Funeral Service, 120 W. Broadway St., Wellston, on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2020, from 5 to 8 p.m.

A funeral service celebrating Gene’s life will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home, with Pastor J.R. Croston officiating. Burial with full Military Honors will follow in Hamden Cemetery.

The family would like to thank National Church Residences Hospice and Gene’s VA homebased nurses for the care and love they have shown over the last several weeks.
