Arlie E. Newberry

Arlie E. Newberry, 87, of Wellston, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2020, at the Hamden Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on Oct. 29, 1932, in Clintwood, Virginia, son of the late Willie and Vaudney (Phipps) Newberry.

Arlie was an accomplished poet and author, not only having published a couple of books throughout his life, but also having written more than 600 songs. He enjoyed Cincinnati Reds baseball, “Gunsmoke” and other westerns as well as music contest shows like “The Voice” or “American Idol.” He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his loving family: wife, Ethel; son, Danny (Carolyn) Newberry; daughters, Freda Lilly and Jo Anne (Marvin) Lindsey; brothers, James, Jerry, and Bill; sisters, Kathryn (Avery) Phipps and Ann Moore; as well as 15 grandchildren; numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Arlie was preceded in death by his son, Michael Newberry; brothers, Cecil, Jack, and Sidney; as well as sisters, Dolly Mullins and Irene Jones.

Private services have been completed.
