Alva L. “Pick” Waugh, Jr.

Alva L. “Pick” Waugh, Jr., age 97, of Wellston, passed away Wednesday morning, March 14, 2018 at Jenkins Care Community Assisted Living in Wellston. He was born March 7, 1921 in Wellston, Ohio to the late Alva L. Waugh, Sr. and Eva M. Dye Waugh.

Pick was a 1939 graduate of Wellston High School. He was a Veteran of the United States Army Air Corp, who served during WW II. Pick was proud of the fact that he was one of the oldest surviving WW II veterans in Jackson County and part of the World’s Greatest Generation.

In his earlier years, Pick drove a coal truck and went door to door selling coal for many years. Immediately following that, Pick became an insurance agent and went on to become the owner and operator of Waugh Insurance in Wellston for several years until his retirement and sale of the business to his son, Dan.

Pick enjoyed, and was known for, riding his bicycle around Wellston up into his later years. He also enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes, boating on the Ohio River and snow birding to Florida for many years.

Pick was a member of the American Legion Post 371 of Wellston and a former active member of the Wellston Lions Club and he enjoyed working on the Lions Club Horse Show.

He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Carol Waugh of Grove City, Larry Waugh (Sherry DeBord) of Chillicothe, and Dan and Lori Waugh of Wellston; grandchildren, Lisa Waugh (partner, Melissa Frye), Laura Wehby (Jason), Zak Waugh (Sarah), Spencer Waugh (Sydney), Courtney Waugh, Grant Waugh, Andrew Waugh, Chris Waugh (Kacie), and Alex Waugh (Brittany); along with nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Pick was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Eileen Waugh in 2008; daughter-in-law, Debra Waugh; two grandchildren and eight brothers and sisters.

Calling hours will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service, with military honors, will follow the calling hours at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jim Waugh and Rev. John Waugh officiating. Private burial will be in the Ridgewood Cemetery.
