Charles L. McCoppin

Charles L. McCoppin, age 89, of Hamden, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at Jenkins Care Community in Wellston.  He was born June 3, 1930 in Columbus, Ohio. 

Charlie was a 1948 graduate of Hamden High School and a veteran of the United States Army, who served during the Korean War.  He was a former agent operator for B&O Railroad, from where he retired following 34 years of employment.  Charlie was also the former Mayor of the village of Hamden for 23 years, former member of the Hamden Village Council, and former Service Director for the City of Wellston.  Charlie also held various other positions and memberships throughout his life including Director of Wellston Area Chamber of Commerce, SEOEMS Board of Trustees, Vice Chairman of Vinton Co. CIC, Ohio Valley Regional Development Board, Executive Board of Vinton County Health Department, Elks Lodge in Jackson for 57 years, V.F.W. Post 9092 in Wellston, American Legion Post 371 of Wellston for 64 years, American Legion Riders Motorcycle Club, Shrine Club, along with being a 32nd Degree Mason and a Kentucky Colonel. 

Charlie is survived by sisters-in-law, Patty Massie of Wellston and Sandy Mullins (Robert) of Wilkesville; nieces and nephews, Michelle Walburn (Bradley), who were his caregivers, Jim Pope (Peggy Murdoch), Mike Massie (Jill), Scott Massie, David Mullins, Julie Kemp (Rob), JD Graham (Kelly), Joe Graham and Jeff Graham (Pat); as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Camink Hayhurst; wife, Ann Clark McCoppin; nephew, Rob Mullins; and several other brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Charlie’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.  Private burial, with military honors, will be held at the convenience of the family in Ridgewood Cemetery with Pastor Tim Jones officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Charlie’s memory to the American Legion Post 371, 1001 South Pennsylvania Avenue, Wellston, Ohio 45692.  Arrangements are under the direction of the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston.  Online condolences can be sent to the family at
