Ora Leland Crabtree

Ora Leland Crabtree, age 93, of Jackson, Ohio, went home to be with Jesus Monday, February 18, 2013 at the Holzer Medical Center in Jackson. He was born in Jackson, on August 20, 1919 to the late William Forrest Crabtree and Jessie Hatten Crabtree.

Ora was married to Eva (Adkins) Crabtree on August 5, 1946 and they were happily married for 64 years, until Eva’s passing on February 20, 2011.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Sherman Wayne Crabtree of Jackson; a sister, Hazel Farrar (and her husband, James) of Jackson; a brother, Forrest Dale Crabtree (and his wife, Ethel) of Jackson, brother-in-law, Kenneth Reed of Springfield, Ohio; and one great-grandson, Emery Luke Sarnowski.

Ora is survived by two daughters, Janet (Roger) Ewing of Jackson, and Violet (Tom) Arthur of Jackson; a sister, Virginia Rust of Springfield, Ohio; a brother, Elmo and sister-in-law, Ann Crabtree of Jackson; seven grandchildren, Rhonda (Randy) Oliver, Marsha Fox, Randy (Mandy) Ewing, Darrell Causey, and Sherman (Missy) Crabtree, all of Ohio, Annette of Texas, and Christine (Garrett) Palmer of North Carolina; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

Ora was proudly a WW II Army veteran where he served in Central Europe (France), earning a Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. He retired from the V.A. Hospital in Chillicothe, Ohio. Ora raised his own garden and had many different kinds of animals through the years. He exercised and ate healthy most of his life and encouraged everyone around him to do the same.

He had a remarkable memory and could recall people and events from many years past, and was known as the family historian. Ora was a member of the Lighthouse Church in Jackson, for 23 years, and enjoyed being involved with the Jackson Senior Citizens Center for the past 24 years, where he and his late wife faithfully attended and participated until their health no longer allowed it. Ora spent a short time at the Four Winds Nursing Facility in Jackson, during his illness.

Ora enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lewis-Gillum Funeral Home in Jackson, and a funeral will be held Thursday, February 21, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Lighthouse Church, Kessinger School Road, Jackson. Interment will follow at the Fairmount Cemetery in Jackson.
