Martha Jane Gilliland, age 75, of Wellston, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017 at the Holzer Medical Center in Jackson, Ohio. She was born Feb. 5, 1942 in Wellston, Ohio to the late Luther L. Hartley and Marietta Margaret Morris Hartley.
Martha was a 1960 graduate of Wellston High School. She retired from the Wellston City Schools, where she was employed as a school cook for 25 years. Martha enjoyed quilting, sewing, embroidering, working puzzles and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Wellston.
Martha is survived by her husband of 54 years, Charles F. “Charlie” Gilliland; children, Mary Louise Hughes (Jay) of Ray, Tom Gilliland of Wellston, and Chad Gilliland (Pattie) of Wellston; grandchildren, Kevin Wiseman, Kelly Woodgeard (Timm), Ashley Pittenger (Tony), T.J. Gilliland, Morgan Gilliland, and Stephanie Hill; great-grandchild, Jerrick Pittenger; sisters, Anna Belle Linton of Wellston, Lorretta Betts of Dayton, Mary McCray of Waynesville, and Jeannie Jordan (Keith) of Wellston; brothers, James Hartley of Chillicothe, John Hartley of Brookville, and Robert Hartley of Wellston; as well as several step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Besides her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her brothers, Donald Hartley and Luther Hartley, Jr. Calling hours will be Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home with Sandy Wright and Ann Keating officiating. Burial will follow in the Salem Cemetery.
