Lewis J. “Shorty” Holberg, Jr.

Lewis J. “Shorty” Holberg, Jr., age 93, of Wellston, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019 at Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis, Ohio. He was born Jan. 13, 1926 in Oak Hill, Ohio, son of the late Lewis J. Holberg, Sr. and Clara Johnson Holberg.

Lewis was a veteran of the United States Army, who served during WW II. After several years of employment, “Shorty” retired from the City of Wellston, where he was the Superintendent of Ridgewood Cemetery. Following his retirement from the City, he continued his strong work ethic by hand, digging graves at several cemeteries in the surrounding area, as well as working in local factories up into the later years of his life. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening and working in his yard, and he loved taking care of his pets.

Lewis is survived by his wife of 22 years, Donia Woollet Holberg; brother, Kenneth Holberg; along with several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Ervin Holberg; sisters, Virginia and Eloise; and brother, Vernal.

In keeping with Lewis’ wishes, his body was cremated. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be given to the Jackson County Dog Pound, 248 Reservoir Road, Jackson, Ohio 45640.
