Jeanne C. Johnston

By | September 6, 2018

Jeanne C. Johnston died on Sept. 4, 2018. She was pre-deceased by her devoted husband of 68 years, Herbert Johnston; parents, Grace and Harry Collis; brothers, Harry and Jack Collis.

She is survived by her children, Jeffrey Johnston and Christine Johnston (Steven Glaser); her favorite granddaughter, Nina Glaser; and nieces and nephews.

Jeanne was born Oct. 4, 1928 in Ironton, Ohio. She graduated from Oak Hill High School and attended Ohio University. She graduated in 1950, attending graduation in the morning and marrying Herb in the afternoon. She worked for the Cleveland Press and the Cleveland School District as a nutritionist before she and Herb moved to Columbus.

She loved being a mother and championed her family above all else. She worked as a substitute teacher, a volunteer in school libraries, and was an active participant in many community organizations. She served in several volunteer capacities at First Community Church. She became a Girl Scout troop leader and eventually became the President of the Seal of Ohio Girl Scout Council, serving from 1982-1988.

Her love of scouting and its mission of empowering girls endured; she made lasting friendships with other adult scouts. She loved her community, her church and the Ohio State Buckeyes. We inherited her spirit of adventure, her love of travel, and her care for others, especially those less fortunate than she. We miss her deeply.

Service arrangements are pending. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland, Attention: Philanthropy Department, 1700 Watermark Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43215 — or to the charity of your choice.
