Irvin “Slick” Potter

Irvin “Slick” Potter, age 76, of Oak Hill went to rest in paradise to await the coming of his Lord following a courageous eight-year battle against Pulmonary Fibrosis. He made his journey to paradise in the early morning hours of November 29, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving and cherished wife of 54 years, “Sally,” his children, grandchildren and additional family members.

Irvin was born January 12, 1936 in Letcher County, Kentucky. His family moved to Ohio in 1952. He was a life-long member of the Church of Christ. He was a coal miner for 28 years, a member of the United Mine Workers Local 1886. He retired in 1997. He is preceded in death by his parents, Sherman and Augie (Reynolds) Potter, brothers, Clyde Joe Potter (Pvt. 1st class Inf. WWII), Odeen Potter, Jimmie (Martha) Potter, and sisters, Mattie Potter Wyatt and Dorothy Harkins.

He is survived by his faithful wife of 54 years, Joyce Vickie (Tolliver) Potter; devoted children, Debbie Potter and Richard Potter, of Oak Hill, Elizabeth (Dennis) Thompson, Duane (Jennifer) Potter, of Chillicothe, and Kay (Greg) Anderson, of Grafton. Also surviving are his treasured grandchildren, Cody, Brittani, and Shelbi Potter, Matt and Kayla Smith; his precious great-grandsons, Brodie and Braydon; his brother, Owen (Janice) Potter, of Oak Hill; his beloved brother-in-law, J. E. Tolliver; as well as a host of relatives, friends and UMWA brothers. Irvin’s faith, time with family and friends, gardening, fishing and his horses were his greatest joys in life.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home in Oak Hill with brothers in Christ, Emery McCallister and Joe Hill officiating. Burial will follow in C.M. Cemetery. Friends may call Monday, December 3, 2012 from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
