Grace Ellen (Mercer) McCoy

By | April 3, 2017

Grace Ellen (Mercer) McCoy was born Feb. 25, 1935 on the family farm in Franklin Township, Jackson County to Loren A. and Grace (Lewis) Mercer. She was the youngest of four children. She departed this life April 2, 2017 after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

After graduating from Jackson High School in 1952, Grace married the love of her life, Charles Wendell McCoy, and they worked together to build a home and a family. They started the adventure of parenthood when Robert A. was born in 1959 and the family was completed when Susan arrived three years later. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker – always willing to host a house or yard full of kids for a birthday party or youth group gathering. She also enjoyed spending time with extended family which included numerous in-laws and nieces and nephews. Nothing gave her greater pleasure than her grandchildren, Michael and Adina McCoy.

Grace was a people person who worked for nearly 40 years as a customer service representative in the local banking industry, finally retiring from Ohio Valley Bank. She was the first female Franklin Township trustee, serving out the remainder of her late husband’s term. She was a devoted longtime member of the Fourmile Christian Church. She had a special empathy for senior citizens and often went above and beyond to help them. Grace always had a very gracious nature which she retained even as Alzheimer’s slowly stole her away.

In addition to her parents, Grace was preceded in death by her siblings, Betty Blamer, Carol Swaney, and Boyd Jay Mercer, as well as her beloved husband of 43 years, Wendell. She is survived by her children, Robert A. (Marjorie) McCoy and Susan (David) Davidson, and grandchildren.

Friends may call Tuesday, April 4, 2017 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Jackson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at the Fourmile Christian Church on Four Mile Road in Jackson with Minister Skip Domigan officiating.
