Gladys Marie (Roese) Carpenter

Gladys Marie (Roese) Carpenter, age 93, of Oak Hill, passed away Monday, August 3, 2015. She was born March 20, 1922 in Waterloo, Ohio to the late Alexander D. and Hazel (Malone) Roese.

She was married to Fred A. Carpenter from Gallia, together they raised five children, Arnold (Sarah) Carpenter, Fred (Jackie) Carpenter, Mike (Rita) Carpenter, all of Oak Hill; Richard (Delayne) Carpenter of Vista, California; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Charlene Roese.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Carpenter, who passed away in 1961; three brothers, Carl, Leon and Alec Roese; and one sister, Zelda Hammons.

Gladys was a member of the Gallia Baptist Church and she also attended RC of God. She and her sister Zelda started going to the Senior Citizens together, and after Zelda’s passing, Gladys became very active at the center. She loved working from the garden, canning fruit, vegetables and jelly, making pies, apple butter and candy. She also enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles. Gladys became the Queen for the Oak Hill Senior Citizens Center in 2008.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 8, 2015 at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Oak Hill with Pastor Cline Rawlins officiating. Burial will follow in Gallia Baptist Cemetery.
