David Lee Matteson

David Lee Matteson, age 74, of Wellston, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017 at his home. He was born Dec. 11, 1942 in Columbus, Ohio, son of the late Leland James Matteson, Jr. and Marjorie Rebecca Harris Matteson Fields.

David was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a former self-employed contractor and a former airplane pilot who enjoyed flying private planes as well as operating model airplanes. He loved the agricultural life and was an avid farmer who took pride in taking care of his animals. David was a member of the Goodale Masonic Lodge #372 in Columbus where he was Master of the Lodge in 1987, 1992 and 1997.

He is survived by his wife, whom he married on June 20, 1970, Carolyn Sue “Susie” Clark Matteson; children, Charles “Chuck” Matteson of Pt. Pleasant, W. Va., Mark Henry Matteson (Misty) of Columbus and Diane Lea Matteson (Ken Coleman) of Westerville; grandchildren, Alan Matteson (Sierra) of Columbus, Sabrina Matteson of Columbus, Damian Matteson of Westerville and Kristy Matteson of Columbus; great-grandchildren, Kyleigh and Nala; brothers and sisters, Robert Matteson of Hamden, Jack Matteson of Florida, Rebecca Lynn Craig (Curtis) of Wellston, Kathy Weller (Terry) of Missouri, Steve Matteson (Sue) of Wellston, Sam Matteson (Amanda) of Tennessee and Tom Matteson (Tawanya) of Wilmington; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Henry Matteson.

Calling hours will be Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston where a Masonic service will begin at 4 p.m., followed by military honors by the Jackson County DAV and American Legion Post 371 of Wellston. Funeral service will begin immediately following the military honors with John Pelletier, CLP officiating. In keeping with David’s wishes, cremation will follow the service.
