Charles H. Smith

By | May 4, 2018

Charles H. Smith departed this earth on May 4, 2018 at Adena Regional Medical Center and will join the love of his life and soulmate where they will walk hand in hand on the streets of gold.

Charlie, as all knew him, was born on Jan. 13, 1949 and raised in Monroe Hollow by his grandparents, George and Viola Smith. He attended Kenneth Lewis School and later, Oak Hill High School, graduating with the Class of 1967. Shortly after graduation, he became an American soldier with the United States Army and served during Vietnam, receiving a purple heart and bronze medals for his dedication and service to his country. The war took its toll on Charlie as it did many other veterans.

Shortly after returning home to Oak Hill, he met and married his soulmate, Janet (Gray) Smith. She left him on Christmas Day in 2009 to be with the Lord but never did their love and memories leave Charlie’s heart as he continued on without her.

He is survived by two sons: Shawn Smith and Brandon Smith of Oak Hill, Ohio; brother and sister-in-law, Boyd and Bonnie McCain; aunt, Doris Dotson; as well as several nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, May 7, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Oak Hill. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Stan Howard officiating. Burial with military honors will be held at Horeb Cemetery.
