Bethel Downard, age 94, of Wellston, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018, at Jenkins Care Community in Wellston. She was born March 13, 1924 in Ashland, Kentucky, daughter of the late George W. Smith and Minnie Ritchie Smith.
Bethel was a homemaker and a former nurse’s aide. She was a very talented lady, who enjoyed painting, singing and playing the guitar, piano and harmonica. Bethel was also very skilled with crafts, such as woodworking. She also delighted in making dolls and then giving them away to family and friends.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry Stephen and Nancy Downard of Wellston; grandchildren, Tendra Downard (Earl Wilbur) of Wellston and Larry Stephen Downard of Orlando, Florida; great-grandchildren, Larry Stephen Downard III and Brittany Downard; great-great-grandchildren, Eli, Luke and Logan Downard; sisters, Minnie and Eva; along with several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James “Max” Downard in 2002; son, James Meredith “J.D.” Downard; and several brothers and sisters.
Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. with Pastor Andy Rawlins officiating. Burial will be in the Ridgewood Cemetery. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.mcwilliams-funeralhome.com
